Overview

Peanut Island Park is 37.44 acres of Palm Beach County park in Lake Worth Inlet, with boat access only and day use hours from sunrise to sunset. The county offers limited boat docking facilities on both the east and west sides of the island, and fourteen numbered slips are available for day use on a first-come, first-served basis.

How the docks work

All docks are for day use only, except by permit. The floating dock on the east side is designated for loading and unloading with a maximum ten minute limit; the floating docks on the west side are day use only and first come, first served. It is prohibited to anchor or beach vessels between the East Boat Dock and the Fishing Pier.

After sunset the docks are for the exclusive use of registered campers tent camping in the reserved campground – and even then, slips are not guaranteed to campers upon their arrival. Boats moored in the slips may not be used for sleeping accommodations. The county's own line is that boat operators use park docks at their own risk.

The reef east of the island

Coast Pilot 4 describes a reef in the form of a ridge with scattered boulders extending about 300 yards eastward of Peanut Island, about 25 feet north of the improved channel, with a least depth of about 4 feet over it. On the ebb, the current sets across the reef in a northeasterly direction; the current in the inlet runs 2.4 knots on the flood and 3.6 knots on the ebb.

Ashore

There are restroom facilities, a fishing pier, saltwater fishing in designated areas only, a snorkeling lagoon and guarded and unguarded swimming beaches – with the county's own note that the swimming area is currently unguarded during the week. Two group picnic pavilions are first come, first served and a third is for registered camper use only. The campground has 17 reserved tent sites, booked on 561-845-4445, and the county gives 561-629-8775 for daily beach conditions. The historic John F. Kennedy Bunker is closed until further notice.
