Overview

Martin County's mooring field in the Indian River Lagoon lies off the Jensen Beach Causeway. The county calls it a 43-vessel facility and takes vessels up to 50 ft, on steel helix anchors with Helmken StormSoft upline buoy systems. The harbormaster answers on VHF channel 16, and reservations go through (772) 320-3184.

Ashore there are restrooms and showers, a laundry with washers and dryers that take quarters only, a dinghy dock, parking and a boat ramp nearby. Dinghies are made fast on one line, not side-tied.

What the county says about the water

Two figures, and neither carries a datum. The field's page gives an average depth at low tide of 7 1/2 ft; the county's overview of the same field says 8 ft. Both are the county's own numbers, not soundings, and nothing says which surface they are measured from.

Between the field and the waterway the county warns of shoaling as shallow as 5 feet during extremely low tide. For a boat drawing more than 4 ft it recommends leaving the waterway south of channel marker R 220 and heading west 30 to 40 feet before turning north into the field. And it advises vessels that draw more water not to book buoys #50 to #56 — seven of the buoys in a field it calls a 43-vessel facility.

What it costs

A mooring is $30.00 plus tax a day, $180.00 plus tax a week or $400.00 plus tax a month. The laundry is separate: $2.00 a washer load and $1.50 a dryer load, in quarters.

Cancelling is not free. There is a one-time recovery charge of $10.00, and a monthly or long-term booking carries a 20% fee on top. The notice periods differ by the booking: a daily reservation is cancelled 24 hours before noon on the arrival date, a weekly one 5 days before, a monthly or long-term one 15 days before. Late arrivals and early departures are not eligible for a refund.

Insurance, and what counts as living aboard

The county sets insurance minimums by length: $300,000 per occurrence for vessels 40 ft and under, $500,000 for 41 ft to 50 ft. Fifty feet is the maximum length allowed. A stay of 30 days or more also needs proof of registration and Martin County named as an additional insured.

A vessel counts as a liveaboard once it is inhabited for any five consecutive days, or ten days within a 30-day period. That status is limited to not more than six months within a 12-month period.
